American Political Martyrs

Martyrs are people who choose to accept the option that they may suffer death instead of giving up their religious faith or important beliefs. The word comes from an old Greek term that means "witness".

We of the Evangelical Catholic Church unconditionally embrace our sacramental obligations to give witness in opposition to any and all forms of evil based acts of oppression against any member of the human family.

Scripture has historically repeatedly emphasizes God's deep care for the vulnerable and commands believers to actively defend those who suffer. Key scriptures include

Isaiah 1:17

"Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed."

Psalm 9:9

"The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed"

Psalm 103:6

"The Lord works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed".

Despite some significant acts of hope in recent years, the imperfect historical record of the United States documents the flaws in our ability to unconditionally implement and witness the goals of Social Justice and Peace for our past and present citizens and their families.  Many times our collective journey towards progress is reminiscent of the saying “two steps forward and one step behind.”
